MetricBridge.ioFinding duplicate GA4 pageviews without breaking Shopify purchases
An investigation of Shopify Customer Privacy API, GTM in the theme and custom pixel, and missing consent synchronization. The internal team subsequently implemented and verified the fix.
The challenge
Shopify recorded visitors’ privacy choices, but Google Consent Mode did not consistently reflect those choices. A GA4 page_view was duplicated after consent acceptance, while the checkout purchase path relied on a Shopify custom pixel.
Implementation
Documented the source-of-truth bridge from Shopify Customer Privacy API to Google Consent Mode v2. Recommended a pixel-context send_page_view guard to keep the theme responsible for storefront pageviews. Protected checkout_completed purchase delivery from the Shopify custom pixel instead of removing that integration. Reviewed the final GTM v10 logic after the internal team published the fix.
Verification
Captured duplicate network requests and Tag Assistant evidence before remediation. The internal implementation team confirmed the Shopify consent bridge, pageview guard and published GTM version 10 were live and verified. Documented a repeatable test plan for accepted, rejected and withdrawn consent and purchase protection.
Technical outcomes
Root causes reproduced and explained. Team-implemented Consent Mode bridge and pageview guard verified by the internal team. Purchase path preserved in the Shopify custom-pixel context.
Scope and evidence limits
My contribution was audit, diagnosis and validation of the pattern. The internal team published the final GTM change. No post-fix revenue or attribution increase is claimed.
